Italy: Ravenna

I have been wanting to see Ravenna for a long time.  It was the Western capital of the Byzantine Empire after the Roman Empire fell.  It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.  It is full of Byzantine history and incredibly well-preserved Byzantine churches.  Because most of the church decor was mosaics and not frescos that fade over time, the Biblical depictions are as brilliant as ever.

Wandering the streets of Ravenna.

In front of the 6th century Basilica of San Vitale.

This is what the mosaics looked like inside.  Beautiful depictions of the life of Christ.

Anna Claire wandering the gallery near the Basilica.

Mausoleum of Galla Placidia - it is one of the earliest and best-preserved of all the mosaic monuments.  A camera cannot capture it's stunning brilliance.
