Italy: Fortress of San Leo

Yes, we are in Italia for the October school break!  Rob had a conference in Rimini, a beach resort on the Adriatic Coast (how convenient!) so we decided to tag along to take in some fresh sea breezes and good Italian food.  Another benefit is that we got to stay in a great hotel, right next to the beach.  I don't really like the fact that Rob travels every week, but at least he accumulates lots of hotel rewards.

While Rob was working, Kari and I took the kids to a nearby fortress - Il Castello di San Leo.  It's a scenic fortress perched atop an imposing cliff.  Historically, it was originally used as a fortified palatial retreat, but it is most famous for being the final prison of Count Cagliostro, an infamous occultist and generally, as Mariah would say "a very bad man".

 Il Castello di San Leo.

The kids in front of the fortress.  I was so excited for warm Italian weather, that I didn't bring the kids' sweatshirts.  Natasha was freezing, so she got to wear a towel.

The view of the tiny town below.

Another scenic view of the castle.

Natasha and Tyler in front of the old church.

Anna Claire posing with the tank.  I have no idea why this was here.

Anna and Mariah imagining what it's like to be tortured.
The most interesting exhibit in the museum was the torture room.  I couldn't show the kids all the torture devices.  They were too gruesome.

Natasha was exhausted by all the walking.  She finally lay down on the floor and REFUSED to get up.

Siblings. . .

Natasha and Tyler loved running down this hallway.

Peek-a-boo!

Peeking out of Cagliostro's prison cell.

An attempt to take a picture with the kids.
