Italy: Crossing into San Marino

I have traveled to nearly 60 countries in my life, but my dad always outdoes me on this matter.  When I call him and tell him about an exotic place I'm going to he almost always says, "Oh yes, I remember when I went there."  Well, San Marino is one of the few countries I have been to and my dad has not.  It's a tiny country perched atop a hill completely surrounded by Italy.  Somehow, it has managed to remain independent since it was founded in 301 A.D.  It is the oldest surviving republic in the world, with a constitution enacted in 1600.  Sorry, America, yours didn't come until nearly 200 years later.  I biked from Rimini to here a few years back and wanted to take the kids this time.

We're here in San Marino!

Climbing the town walls.

Anna counted all the steps up to the top, to a point.
She got into so many hundreds that she gave up.

See Dad, I'm really here!

Check out the view guys!

Mommy checked out the view.  It was incredible!

On our way up to one of the castle towers.

We stopped to eat a snack in front of one of the towers.  It was picturesque -- but not a great picture!

Mariah who loves to pose.
